Are Batswana Swarming in Ireland?
By: Glen Mokoka
In a recent development, the Irish government has deployed a new law that requires Batswana and South Africans to procure a transit Visa when they wish to connect flights via Ireland. This seems to be a move intended upon skimming down the number of asylum seekers from these distinct countries.
Bongani Malunga wrote in the most recent issue of the Botswana Gazette that "As of April this year, Ireland’s Department of Justice had recorded 777 asylum seeker applications from Botswana. The tally placed Botswana as the 10th highest country with applicants seeking international protection in Ireland."
